Berhale and Kunneba, Afar Region: Comprehensive Support for Returned IDPs
We provided extensive multi-sectoral assistance to 34,868 returned IDPs, addressing a wide range of needs from health and nutrition to education and livelihoods.
Key Activities
- Health & Nutrition: Our Mobile Health and Nutrition Teams (MHNT) provided essential treatment and consultation. We delivered a full spectrum of health services, including antenatal care (ANC), assisted delivery, family planning, Measles and TT vaccination, deworming, and Vitamin A supplementation. We also strengthened three Stabilization Centers (SC) and 16 Outpatient Therapeutic Program (OTP) sites to manage both complicated and uncomplicated cases of severe acute malnutrition (SAM). Our nutrition teams also managed cases of moderately acute malnutrition (MAM) in children and pregnant/lactating women. To build local capacity, we conducted SAM management training for health workers, refreshment training for Health Extension Workers, and Family MUAC and IYCF-E training for health staff.
- Livelihoods and Food Security: We improved agricultural resilience by distributing improved cereal crops and vegetable seeds along with essential farm tools like shovels and pickaxes. We also provided conditional cash assistance and conducted post-distribution monitoring to ensure the aid was effective.
- Education and WASH: We distributed scholastic materials and provided catch-up class support for Grade 8 and 12 students to help them continue their education. We also rehabilitated two schools to improve learning conditions and distributed hygiene kits to promote better health practices.
