Livelihood and Food Security
A livelihood project aims to improve income, well-being, and resilience for people living in poverty. These projects may include providing loans, training, and resources to help individuals start or expand businesses. They also strengthen the social and environmental aspects of communities where they are implemented.
MCMDO reaches communities from rural kebeles to overcrowded urban slums and refugee camps, supporting diverse beneficiaries across all regions of Ethiopia.
Our Approach
Ensuring sustainable livelihoods and food security is central to reducing poverty and building resilient communities. MCMDO supports vulnerable populations—including rural households, urban slum dwellers, and refugees—by enhancing their income, productivity, and access to essential resources. Through targeted interventions in agriculture, vocational training, and community awareness, the program empowers individuals and households to improve their well-being, diversify their livelihoods, and achieve greater food security.
MCMDO supports refugees and vulnerable households to produce their own food, raise livestock for milk, and generate additional income through backyard vegetable production.
Organizing community discussions on child feeding, vegetable production, and Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF).
Conducting cooking demonstrations, training community incentive workers and model beneficiaries, and distributing agricultural tools.
Provides practical skills learned through experience or training, enabling individuals and groups to manage daily challenges effectively.
Offers alternatives for urban refugees and hotspot communities to learn woodwork, metalwork, cooking, and other livelihood skills through the Livelihood Regional Development Partnership Program.
MCMDO has implemented 20 livelihood and food security projects under development and humanitarian programs.
Interventions have enabled communities to increase household income, improve productivity, and enhance dietary diversity.
Poor and marginalized women and children, in particular, have realized their potential, contributing to reduced gender disparities and poverty.
MCMDO empowers communities with food security, livelihoods, and essential skills for sustainable development.
