Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WaSH)
Ethiopia has made significant progress in access to safe drinking water, achieving a 57% access rate and halving the number of people without safe water since 1990. However, access to improved sanitation remains a critical challenge, with only 28% coverage nationwide. Inadequate WaSH services and poor hygiene negatively impact health, as diarrheal disease is a leading cause of under-five mortality in Ethiopia. MCMDO is committed to increasing access to water, improving sanitation and hygiene, and raising awareness about waste management. Since our inception, we have successfully implemented 16 projects related to sanitation, hygiene, and rural water supply.

Our Impact by the Numbers
Improved sanitation coverage Communities
Safe drinking water access
National potable water supply coverage increased from 58% to 68.4% between 2009/10 and 2012/13, reflecting an increase in both rural and urban coverage.
Access to improved sanitation remains low at only 28% nationwide, highlighting the critical need for our continued efforts in this area.
Only 20% of households in Ethiopia have water on their premises, with a stark difference between urban (77%) and rural areas (6%).
At MCMDO, we are dedicated to addressing the root causes of health challenges to create a healthier future for all.
