Women’s Economic Empowerment.
Women and girls in Ethiopia face significant disadvantages compared to boys and men, particularly in literacy, health, livelihoods, and basic human rights. They often have low social status, limited support networks, and unequal participation in the workforce. While women represent about 50% of Ethiopia’s labor force, most are engaged in unpaid family work or self-employed in informal jobs.
Women empowerment is the crucial entry point for all MCMDO programs. Women and children are at the center of every intervention, reaching communities from rural kebeles to overcrowded urban slums and refugee camps. To date, MCMDO has empowered and sustained over 10,000 beneficiaries across 120 woredas nationwide. Currently, we run two projects in Arada Sub-City, Woredas 08 and 04, in partnership with GOAL International Ethiopia.
MCMDO’s Holistic Approach to WEE
MCMDO adopts a comprehensive approach to women’s economic empowerment across four domains:
Supporting women’s income generation and entrepreneurship.
Providing training, finance, technology, and market opportunities.
Strengthening women’s influence in households and markets, and balancing paid and unpaid work.
Advocating for policies, laws, and social norms that promote gender equality.
16 dedicated WEE projects implemented under the thematic component.
Integrated as a cross-cutting component in over 70 projects nationwide.
10,000+ women and girls empowered across 120 woredas.
Strengthened economic independence, livelihoods, and decision-making power for marginalized women.
Empowering women and girls across Ethiopia to strengthen livelihoods, enhance decision-making, and drive lasting community transformation.
