Betsinat: A Journey of Resilience, Opportunity and Hope
From Grade 3 Sponsorship to University Graduate | GPA 3.2
“Betsinat” is an Amharic name associated with resilience. Her journey is a beautiful reflection of that meaning.
For Betsinat Eyob, the journey from a young schoolgirl to a university graduate began when she was just in Grade 3.
Growing up in a low income household, continuing her education was not always easy. The cost of school fees, transportation, books and other essential learning materials could have placed a significant burden on her family.
But through MCMDO’s sponsorship programme, Betsinat was given an opportunity that would help shape her educational journey and open doors for her future.
A Journey That Started in Grade 3
Betsinat joined MCMDO’s sponsorship programme when she was in Grade 3. Through the programme, she was enrolled at Bethlehem School, where she continued her education until Grade 4 before moving to El Bethel School.
Throughout her school years, MCMDO provided support to help her remain in education. This included school fees, monthly transportation costs, books, pens and other essential school materials.
For Betsinat, this support meant she could focus on learning without the constant worry of whether her family could afford the costs associated with her education.
Supporting Her Beyond Secondary School
The support did not end when Betsinat completed Grade 12.
After joining Bahir Dar University, she continued to receive support from MCMDO, including monthly financial assistance to help cover some of her expenses.
With this continued support, Betsinat was able to pursue a degree in Logistics and Supply Chain Management and successfully graduate from university.
She completed her studies with a GPA of 3.2 and achieved a 77% score on her exit examination.
From Sponsorship to the Workplace
Today, Betsinat is beginning the next chapter of her journey.
After graduating, she found employment within just a few weeks and currently works in the marketing department of NZ Event Marketing and Promotion Company.
Although her current position is not directly in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Betsinat sees it as an opportunity to gain experience while continuing to work towards her long term career goals.
She is currently applying for positions with different organisations and companies, with the hope of eventually working in the field in which she studied.
Her journey is a reminder that education support can create opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.
A Change That Reached the Whole Family
For Betsinat, the impact of the sponsorship programme goes beyond academic achievement.
Coming from a household with limited income, she believes that continuing her education without support would have been extremely difficult.
MCMDO’s assistance not only reduced the financial pressure on her family, but also gave her the opportunity to concentrate on her education and pursue her ambitions.
Her success has also brought happiness and pride to her family, particularly her mother, who has watched her daughter progress from a sponsored schoolchild to a university graduate.
Her Message to Other Sponsored Children
Having experienced the programme herself, Betsinat has a message for the children who are still receiving sponsorship support.
She encourages them to make the most of the opportunity they have been given and to value access to education.
For Betsinat, being able to study in a good school and continue her education is something she considers one of the greatest opportunities she has received.
She also has a message of gratitude for the MCMDO staff who supported her throughout her journey.
Today, Betsinat sees MCMDO as more than an organisation that provided financial assistance. For her, it is an organisation that helped make her dreams possible.
From Support to Possibility
Betsinat’s story is one example of what sustained support can make possible.
Her journey began with a young girl entering a sponsorship programme in Grade 3. Years later, that same girl has graduated from university, entered the workplace and is looking ahead to the career she wants to build.
